Helen Ruth Newton, 85 of Portsmouth, died Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. She was born May 21, 1932 in Portsmouth, the daughter of the late Adolf and Lydia Bartlett Kemp. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lee Newton, whom she married on June 14, 1985; one son, Kenneth Tipton; 3 brothers; 2 sisters and a grandson, Brent Tipton. She was a 1950 graduate of the Portsmouth East High School where she was the 24th name placed on the East Cup, was awarded a Scholorship by the Marting’s to attend Ohio University, after college she returned to work for Marting’s in Portsmouth for 40 plus years. Helen was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and the Business and Professional Women’s group. She was baptized at the Cornerstone United Methodist Church.
Helen is survived by; a son, Ron (Jeanette) Tipton of Cordova, TN; one daughter, Terri Tipton Curl of Columbus; brother, Harold (Grace) Adams and sister, Janet Goddard both of Scioto County; 6 grandchildren, Steven, Matthew, Nathan and Emily Tipton, Brandi Baldridge and Zachary Curl; 7gt grandchildren and 2 gt gt grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Adkins Family Funeral Home in Portsmouth and interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.adkinsfamilyfuneralhome.com
